Denise

Denise had been in her marriage for 17 years and was very afraid to be on her own.  She had a friend that had gone through a divorce and had a horrible experience.  Her friend had even hired a lawyer, but still didn’t get what she felt she was entitled to.  Denise didn’t want to have that same experience.  She was working at Mercy Care as a care coordinator and had heard about Fresh Start.  She even had a Fresh Start catalog sitting on her desk for a while.  She decided that Fresh Start was the place she should go for help.

 
Denise came to the Women’s Resource Center and took Fresh Start 101, she then starting meeting with Diana, one of Fresh Start’s Certified Legal Document Preparers.  Diana worked with Denise and helped her fill out all of the necessary paperwork.  She took her step-by-step through the process and trained her in what to say and what to do in front on the judge.  Denise calls Diana her guardian angel.

 
Her day finally came to face the judge in court.  Denise felt confident and empowered.  She had everything she needed, all organized and in order.  She couldn’t believe some of the other cases at court that day.  There were a number of other divorce cases like hers, that were represented by attorneys that did not have all of their paperwork in order.  The judge reprimanded a number of lawyers for not having their documents correct.  Denise filed her paperwork with no problem and was awarded a very fair judgment for her case.
  

In the beginning, Denise was so worried that her husband had all of the power – how could she possibly do this on her own?  Fresh Start gave her the confidence and knowledge she needed to get through her divorce.  She is now attending other classes through Fresh Start and plans to attend “Starting Fresh” this June to get help with financial aid and going back to school.
